Guidelines For Working In A Montessori Classroom

  1. Always be aware that you are modeling behavior when you are in the classroom. Follow the rules along with the children.
  2. Use a quie, respectful voice.
  3. Walk across the room to talk to a child. Children should walk across the room to you and, if interupting, wait quietly to get your attention.
  4. Sit only on the chairs or floor. Push your chair in after using it.
  5. Children may only choose work from the shelf if they have had either an individual or group presentation on it.
  6. Children may take work to a table or to the floor. If a child works on the floor he/she must get a mat out first.
  7. Work activities are returned to the same shelf and the same place as it was taken.
  8. Materials are used respectfully and for the purpose intended.
  9. Children usually do their own work. If a child wants to help or work with another child they need to ask first.
  10. Lights turned off or a ringing bell means freeze and listen.
