MAC DISSOLUTION OPTIONS
Proposal: Dissolve MAC. MAC becomes a standing committee under PTA.
Discussion:
Pros:
- One Board
- Efficiency
- Less stretch of parent resources
- Flexible use of money
- Other pros raised by general membership
Cons:
- Currently, everyone is a member of MAC and is entitled to vote. Under PTA, must be a PTA member to vote.
- Risk that MAC mission will become diluted.Standing committee chair appointed by PTA, rather than elected by membership.
- Risk that insufficient funds will be allocated for Montessori materials and teacher training.
- Large burden for one board.
- Constrained by National PTA requirements and rules, resulting in less flexibility in how committee functions.
- Difficulty ordering materials if only authorized signatory allowed to sign checks/spend money. Materials currently ordered online using MAC debit card.
- Other cons raised by general membership.
OPTIONS FOR MAC
Option 1: Dissolution of MAC. MAC becomes a standing committee under PTA.
Option 2: During the 2008-2009 school year, MAC Chair will appoint an ad hoc subcommittee to explore the viability of dissolving MAC and MAC becoming a standing committee under PTA. If deemed viable, ad hoc committee will work with PTA to develop a proposed plan and bylaws. Ad hoc committee will present proposal to March 2009 general membership meeting for discussion and vote.
Option 3: MAC continues as separate committee and no need to explore possibility of merging with PTA.
